Western part of the island of Gran Canaria

Mogan and surroundings

Most people have heard of Puerto de Mogan, but hardly anyone knows, that this resort town is actually the harbor of the village of Mogan deep in the gorge. The settlement itself is perhaps not the most beautiful one, however, a raw granite jar, in which he hides, it is one of the most beautiful on the island.
Directly on the GR-200 road from Aldea de San Nicolas de Tolentino, some 10 km before Mogan there is a rock that shimmers with many shades of red, yellows and greens. Probably because of such unusual coloration it was called Los Azulejos (glaze).
A few kilometers away you can turn back to Casa de Venequeras, and from there through a narrow and deep gorge to the uninhabited and beautiful Playa de Venequera. An unpaved dirt road leads to the beach, however, it can be covered by a passenger car.
Already from Mogan, the GC-605 leads towards a huge water reservoir: Las Niftas Dam. There is a free camping site on its shore, run by the local government. Access to running water has been prepared for campers, bathrooms, wooden tables and stone barbecues. Winding and narrow, fortunately, you can drive the asphalt GC-505 from Presa de Las Nińas to the next artificial reservoir, Soria reservoir, which, if not for the mighty dam, one might take for a beautiful mountain lake surrounded by palm trees and green hills.

Port of Mogan

Squeezed between massive cliffs, the resort is often called the Venice of Gran Canaria, and although it is a lot of exaggeration, have to admit, that it is one of the most charming places on the island, and certainly one of the most beautiful resorts. A marina has been created in the former fishing port, around which two-story white houses with colorful finishes were built. Bougainvillea were planted on the roofs and on the connecting pergolas, which fall in colorful cascades – the effect is truly fabulous. There is a small stretch to the east of the port, but a nice golden beach with extremely calm water. It is true that some time ago several holiday resorts were established in the town, lying a little higher in the ravine, however, they were designed that way, that they do not shock with their presence. Puerto de Mogan can be reached by bus #1 z Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
In Puerto de Mogan you can of course laze on the beach, but you can also sign up for a diving course at Atlantik Diving or go on a yellow submarine tour with Submarine Adventure. Underwater life can also be observed from a glass-bottomed vessel, „Lineas Bluebird”.

Tauro Beach, Puerto Rico i Aruinegum

Another gorges east of Puerto de Mogan are occupied by resorts climbing steep rocks. The largest of them -Puerto Rico – was created due to the beautiful semi-circular beach. However, it is puzzling, how tourists are supposed to fit on a small beach, for which dozens of hotels have been prepared in Puerto Rico, including some even on the other side of the highway…
One of the few pluses of this area (beyond the nature almost obscured by hotels) there is a possibility of cheap accommodation at the Gantanamo campsite on the Tauro beach. Puerto Rico also has a Mogan Municipality Tourist Information Office.

The most beautiful routes: Gui-Gui beach

Gui-Gui Beach is one of the most beautiful and least visited beaches in Gran Canaria, mainly because, that it can only be reached on foot or from the sea. The three-hour hike to the beach begins from the village of Tasartico (GC-204 access from the GC-200 road), from where a marked trail leads down the gorge. The route is moderately difficult and nobody in normal physical condition should have any problems with it. You can put up a tent in the vicinity, however, you must obtain Cabildo's approval in advance.
