The southern part of the island of El Hierro

The southern part of the island consists of two very different landscapes. Gently rolling hills and serene, the bright green pine forest surrounding the El Pinar area contrasts with the high and steep cliffs visible from the Isora vantage point and the harsh and disturbing volcanic landscape around La Restingi.

The Pine Forest and Okolice

In the gentle hills covered with Canarian pine trees (canary pine) a small town was located, which serves as the capital of the municipality of El Pinar, established in September 2008 r. El Pinar consists basically of two small villages – The Houses and Taibiąue – along the main road from Valverde to La Restinga. Buses on the Valverde-La Restinga route stop here. For the night you can choose a two-star hotel with a swimming pool, Pinar right by the bus stop or one of the casas rurales. There are also several bars and restaurants in the village.

Tanajara viewpoint

From the stone lookout tower at the top of the Tanajara hill (ok. 900 m n.p.m.) there is a view of the town of El Pinar, light green pine forests surrounding them, and the southern part of the island.

Hoya del Morcillo

This one is perfectly prepared (stone barbecues, firewood, lava flows and tables, running water, sanitary facilities, Children's Playground, court), The camping base, open all year round, is situated in the middle of a pine forest. Hoya del Morcillo is also the only place on the island, in which pitching of tents is allowed. It is worth paying attention to the plaque commemorating the feat of two daredevils, who from this place in 1992 r. they started successfully, five-day balloon trip to Venezuela.

El Julan archaeological zone

W 1870 r. in the southwest of the island, in El Jutón, numerous symbols were discovered in volcanic skates by the Bimbaczów. Assesses itself, that petroglyphs of Libyan-Berber origin, undeciphered to this day, called Los Letreros ("Subtitles”) oraz The Numbers ("Numbers”), come from approx. 200 r. p.n.e. In the archaeological zone, you can also see Tagoror, an interesting structure used by the Bimbacz family, most likely as a meeting place for the council of elders. A tour of the archaeological area must begin with a visit to the Centro de Visitantes de El Julan, where an interesting exhibition devoted to Bimbaczów and the treasures found in El Julan was opened. The archaeological area can only be visited with a guide, who is waiting for volunteers every day, Fr. 10.15 - the visit is free of charge. Going to El Julan, remember about good shoes, a bottle of water and protection from the sun, because to get there, you have to go down approx. 8 km downhill quite steep, volcanic slope (return by the same route).

Llania viewpoint

Viewpoint (1360 m n.p.m.) it is situated not far from the highest peak of the island - Malpaso (1500 m n.p.m.). From the stone terrace in the middle of the laurel forest there is a panoramic view of the Valle de El Golfo. Unfortunately, Visibility may be limited due to frequent fog and low clouds in this area.

Tacorón cove

Stone pools filled with crystal clear water, picnic area, a calm sea and the sun shining almost all year round - this is what a charming cove in Reserva Marina el Mar de Las Calmas offers. If you are looking for a more active holiday, you can go for a walk to the nearby Cueva del Diablo (Devil's Cave) – the path starts at the parking lot.

La Restinga

Once a sleepy fishing village, today it has turned into quite crowded, of course by El Hierro standards, courtyard. Looking at it, to be honest, not the most attractive place on the island, you may wonder, why tourism is developing so intensively here. The answer is so unexpected, which is simple - mainly divers come here, because the nearby Mar de las Calmas is considered one of the best dive sites in the world. People who are not interested in diving will find two small beaches with black sand and a very calm sea. They are usually empty, but unfortunately, they don't look very attractive – this is especially true of the former, above the port itself. Better conditions are on the second beach, a few hundred meters west of the port, towards the guard shaft (you descend to the beach from Avda. Maritima). Deciding to take a bath, you have to watch out for slippery stones at the very entrance to the sea. It is also worth going for a walk to the end of the Avda along the coast. Maritima – in place of, where the boulevard ends, solidified lava fields begin.

Because La Restinga is a diving center, the offer of active recreation is aimed mainly at amateurs of this sport. However, it is not necessary to be an experienced diver, to discover the beauty of the sea around El Hierro – Diving clubs also direct some of their offer to people, who are just starting their diving adventure. The proposals are more or less similar: diving during the day (25-30 € for a single descent) and at night, basic (Open Water Diver ok. 400 €, Scuba Diver ok. 300 €) and specialized PADI courses. It is worth contacting the selected club before the planned departure - it can be a bit complicated on the spot, because, due to departures, offices have unusual opening hours. You can use the services of the following clubs: El Hierro Taxi Diver, reef, The submarine, Benthos, The iron, The Oraz Drum Fan Diving.
