The south of the island of Tenerife

The Medano

The small resort town of El Medano is the perfect place for those, who like sunbathing, and not necessarily the crowds and the surroundings of the resort.
Medano has two beautiful beaches, which are much less crowded than the beaches of the nearby resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa Americas.
In addition, thanks to the constant breeze, They are said to have the best surfing and kitesurfing conditions in all of Tenerife.
At the western end of the main beach, the volcanic Montana Roja rises, and on the other side there is a beautiful undeveloped Playa de la Tejita.
Montana Roja is protected as a nature reserve, however, going to the top is allowed and worth recommending. Not all 2 km northwest of Medano, Cueva de Hermano Pedro opens right next to the airport – hermitage of St.. Peter from St.. Joseph de Betancur, coming from Vilaflor de Chasna.
Though compared to the big resorts, El Medano is microscopic, you can find all the institutions you need here, including the tourist information office.
The cheapest accommodation option is Camping Montana Roja, a few hundred meters from the beach. Residence Carel is a bit more demanding, where you can rent standard rooms or 3-bed apartments, and Medano. As for restaurants, it must be admitted, that in Medano they are very tasty and relatively cheap. Restaurants enjoy a good pond, serving fish and seafood: Adventio, Sandra and Timón serving sea tapas.
As befits a windsurfing center, schools and equipment rentals operate in El Medano, m.in. Surf Center Playa Sur (www.surfcenter.info; equipment rental at 12 at. 60 €) oraz Azul Kite School. There are buses to the town from Santa Cruz de Tenerife (#116) and the Christians (#470 i 483).

Lunar landscape

The greatest attraction of the area is known, but a rarely visited place: Mount of Water. The rounded grayish-yellow rock formations protrude from the ground, as if they were brought from the moon, hence probably the second name of this place – Lunar landscape (“Lunar landscape”). Getting near the lunar rocks requires a bit of a sunset – ok. 3 km north behind Vilaflor (on the fourth sharp turn) you have to turn off the main road into the forest track on the left. After 6 km you will reach a crossroads, from where the signs lead to Campamento Wise del Agua, where you can leave your car. You walk from the camp to the rocks on a marked trail for about an hour.
