The north of the island of Tenerife

Garachico

The name of this tranquil seaside town comes in part from the Guanche language and refers to the characteristic lava formation located just off its coast. (from the Guanche language gara – Island; spanish. chico – little). It seems unbelievable, but considered one of the most picturesque towns of Tenerife, it was once one of the most thriving ports of the island, from where the ships set off, loaded with sugar produced on the spot. Life in founded in 1499 r. the town died out by a Geneva merchant 1706 r., after the volcano eruption, which destroyed much of Garachico, including port. The flooded city rose and – Furthermore – rebuilt, by annexing the lava frozen on the coast, however, it never regained its economic power.

The center of the town is the idyllic Beach de la Libertad with numerous cafes and benches, where the elderly men have lively discussions or play cards. In the square, outside the charming traditional buildings, there are some very interesting and beautiful monuments. The first is the baroque Quinta Roja, where a luxury hotel was arranged. Right next to it is a dark yellow church and the former convent of San Francisco de Asias, currently transformed into a community center and a small museum, where you can see photos of the former Garachico. Another interesting monument is the baroque Palacio de los Condes de la Gomera, due to the black stone tiles adorning it, it is called the Stone House (Stone House). On the eastern side, the square is closed by the baroque Iglesia de Santa Ana with a characteristic white tower topped with a dome. Francisco Montesdeoca Garcia on the left side of the church leads to Juan Gonzalez de la Torre Beach and the adjacent small Puerta Tierra Park (before the volcanic eruption, it was here that the port was located), where a wooden wine press was placed.

Being in Garachico, a visit to the coast is a must – there stands the 16th-century Castillo de San Miguel, where an exhibition of shells and the history of the city was organized. Black, the volcanic coast at the foot of the castle has been converted into beautiful and safe swimming pools with sea water, surrounded by small alleys and sun terraces. A few minutes' walk west is the pier, from where there is a beautiful view of the port and the town. Garachico looks even more beautiful with the Mirador del Emigrante just away from the port 10 min walk west along the main road.

To the point, where there is a nice cafe, can of course be reached by car.
