The northern part of the island of Gran Canaria

Sardine

Northwest of Galdar, in a charming rock cove surrounded by banana plantations, there is a small port settlement of Sardina, with a black beach popular with the locals, Sardina Beach. Several fish restaurants are set up in colorful houses right on the beach – prices in them are definitely lower than in resorts, and food is so much better. El Ancla and La Cueva are especially recommended.

Port of the Snows

A few kilometers to the west lies the small port town of Puerto de las Nieves. The picturesque settlement of traditional white houses in the shade of mighty cliffs is famous for its excellent fish restaurants. Until recently, you could admire the Dedo de Diós in the harbor bay (God's finger) – a rock spire with an unusual shape emerging from the sea. Unfortunately, part of the spire broke off during a storm in 2005 r. In Puerto de las Nieves you can see the 17th century chapel of Nuestra Seńora de las Nieves, bathe in the small coves next to the port (unfortunately, sunbathing on pebble beaches is hardly a pleasure) or take a walk along the seaside promenade, at the end of which are natural pools filled with salt water.
There are buses from Las Palmas to Puerto de las Nieves #101, 102 i 103. Another way to get to Puerto de las Nieves is via Fred Olsen's ferry, who comes here daily from Tenerife.
There is a tourist information office in the town, with material on Puerto de Las Nieves, Agaete and the valleys, in which town they are located. Among the restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood are Capita and El Dedo de Diós in the port itself. For the night you can stay in a modern one, but a nice hotel Puerto de las Nieves.

Agaete

Above the port, The charming town of Agaete sits at the mouth of the beautiful and fertile Valle de Agaete, whose inhabitants live mainly from avocados, mango and coffee famous all over Gran Canaria. The town is a tangle of narrow streets departing from Plaza de la Constitución, next to which stands the Iglesia de la Concepción with 1874 r. Huerto de las Flores is also located in the town, Botanic Garden, in which there is much over 2 thousand. exotic plants.
A bus goes to Agaete #103 z Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; in turn the bus #102 from Agaete to San Nicolas de Tolentino follows a spectacular coastal route. The two most popular restaurants are the homey Casa Pepe and Casa Romantica, surrounded by tropical fruit plantations. For the night you can stay in the beautiful and stylish Las Longueras, ok. 3 km north of the town. In Agaete itself you can rent a room in the rustic house La Luna.

Agaete Valley

Entering the green Agaete valley, especially in spring, many people are amazed. It is worth driving through the entire valley, all the way to the Princesa Guayarmina Hotel, lying almost at the very end. A few hundred meters above there is a viewpoint, from which there are fabulous views. It's good to venture even further – at the end of the road, from where you can admire the small Barranco del Sao and a small lake in the middle of it.

Lowering of the Branch

In early August, Agaete celebrates the Fiestas de la Rama, festival of fertility and water, which most likely comes from the times of the Guanches. The first inhabitants of the island went to the mountains, from where they came down with a dancing step, wielding freshly plucked branches (rama). On the beach, they hit the surface of the water, performing a kind of hypnotic dance. Since the times of the Guanches, little has changed in the celebration of the Fiestas de la Rama (maybe only alcohol was added), and the holiday itself is so popular, that Agaete is visited not only by the inhabitants of Gran Canaria, but also the other islands of the archipelago.
