Beaches

The beaches of El Hierro can be counted on the fingers of one hand, because most of the island's coast are high and steep cliffs. However, quantity does not translate into quality – Las Playas in the south and El Verodal in the north are probably one

of the most beautiful and original beaches of the archipelago.

In addition, they are rarely crowded, and it may even happen, that there will be no one there.

Thirsty for sun and sea water, however, they will not leave El Hierro disappointed. Inventive residents coped with the lack of beaches, by building natural pools with seawater, called charcos. They can be used mainly in the El Golfo area. Together with the surrounding wooden or stone sunbathing decks, they are neatly integrated into naturally beautiful rocky coves. Both pools, as well as the surrounding sunbathing platforms and picnic areas are available free of charge.

Ports

There are two ports on El Hierro: Port Estaca, where ferries and commercial ships call, and a smaller yacht port in La Restinga (922557081; position: 27° 37″ 30″ N, 17° 59” 30″ W; VHF channel 9; 54 places). Planning to enter the latter, it is worth calling at least a day in advance and booking a place.
