Lanzarote – guide

Orientation

The distances on Lanzarote are not large - the island measures its longest point 60 km, and to the fullest 21 km, so that during a few days' stay you can visit the entire area. The highest elevation, Pea del Chache is just about 670 m n.p.m.

The southern part of Lanzarote is primarily resorts on the golden coast and the amazing volcanic Timanfaya National Park. The slightly cooler north is full of tourist attractions – there are interesting volcanic caves Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Rfo suspended between heaven and earth, all designed by Tssar Manrique. North of Lanzarote lies an archipelago of five small islands, Archipielago Chinijo, with La Graciosa – the northernmost inhabited island of the Canaries.

Prom

Lanzarote's ferry connections with the rest of the world are provided by three companies: Acccciona TransMediterranean, Shipping company Armas oraz Fred Olsen.
By choosing between the slightly cheaper Naviera Armas ferries and the faster Fred Olsen catamarans, worth knowing, that only on the ferries of the first carrier can go on the open deck. Fred Olsen catamarans are fully built-up.

Trans Mediterranean (tel 902454645, www.trasmediterranea.es). The ferry stops in Arrecife on the way from Cádiz to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, S.C. of Tenerife and S.C. de La Palma and on the way back (1 weekly connection).

Persons, who intend to travel around the island by bus, should obtain a special bono-bus card worth 12 or 22 €(available at the Arrecife train station). Car

The car is by far the best and practically the cheapest means of transport on the island (excluding public transport buses, which unfortunately, they don't commute everywhere, where is worth going). Even adding gasoline, renting a vehicle for a few days for four people is much cheaper (ok. 26 € per day) than taking part in organized tours around the island (ok. 30-40 € per person). The distances to Lanzarote are not great, therefore it is easy to organize your stay on the island like this, to visit almost the entire island during the afternoon excursions, and in the afternoon have time for sunbathing on the beach.

Although there is no shortage of car rentals in any of the resorts, the vehicle should be booked in advance via the Internet – you can then count on additional discounts.
